Russian warship conducts live-fire exercise off UK coast as new PM takes office
A Russian warship conducted a live-fire exercise in international waters about 40 nautical miles off the UK coast near Plymouth on Monday, according to the British Defense Ministry. The exercise lasted approximately 30 minutes and was monitored by the Royal Navy.
The Russian vessel, identified as the frigate Neustrashimy, informed the British patrol ship HMS Tyne of its intention to conduct the live-fire exercise and requested that the British ship reposition to a safer distance. The HMS Tyne complied with the request and maintained a distance of about five nautical miles from the Russian ship during the exercise.
The exercise took place on the same day that Andy Burnham was inaugurated as the new British Prime Minister. Former British Army chief Lord Richard Dannatt described the exercise as a sign of Russian President Vladimir Putin's aggressive tendencies. "This is another example of Vladimir Putin's aggressive stance, which is most clearly seen in his attack on Ukraine," Dannatt said in an interview with Times Radio. "But he wants to show that Russia has muscles to flex, and it is not a coincidence that this Russian warship decided to conduct a live-fire exercise on the same day that Andy Burnham became Prime Minister."
The British Defense Ministry stated that the Royal Navy monitored the exercise and continues to closely monitor the activity of the Russian ship, ready to protect the UK's national security. The ministry also noted that the Russian ship had warned the British patrol ship HMS Tyne of its intention to conduct the exercise and requested that it reposition to a safer distance.
The exercise is considered rare and unusual due to its proximity to the UK coast and the short notice given. Typically, such exercises are conducted in more open waters and with more advance notice.
The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on the exercise. However, the Kremlin has stated that it has "no hope" for improved relations with London following Andy Burnham's inauguration, citing his "unconditional support" for Ukraine.
This incident is part of a pattern of increased Russian naval activity near UK waters. In June, a Russian warship fired warning shots near a British yacht in the English Channel, and British forces intercepted a Russian oil tanker in the Channel.
The British Defense Secretary, Wes Streeting, described the Russian exercise as "irresponsible." The Royal Navy has been monitoring increased Russian naval activity in the English Channel and the North Sea for several months.
The frigate Neustrashimy is approximately 130 meters long and is equipped with anti-ship missiles, a 100 mm gun capable of firing up to 50 rounds per minute, and Gatling guns as part of its air defense system. The type of weaponry used in the exercise has not been confirmed by authorities.
