The death toll from catastrophic flash floods and mudslides along the Nepal-China border rose to 750 on Sunday, with 3,044 people still missing, authorities in both countries confirmed.
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported 734 deaths and 2,498 missing within its borders, an increase of 59 fatalities from its previous update. In China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, state media CCTV said 16 people had died and 546 remained unaccounted for, including 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries. Among the missing in Tibet is one Portuguese citizen, according to Chinese officials .
Rescue operations faced renewed challenges as heavy rain and rising water levels in the Bhote Koshi River basin forced teams to exercise caution. Nepal’s disaster authority warned of increased river flow in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Chitwan districts, urging personnel and residents in affected areas to take precautions . In Tibet, rescuers near Gyirong Port were temporarily relocated after a new landslide-formed lake raised flood risks .
The disaster began Wednesday when a glacial collapse on the southern slope of Lirung Peak in Nepal triggered an ice-rock avalanche, sending a massive debris flow over 20 kilometers downstream into Gyirong Port, according to China’s Xinhua news agency . The U.S. Geological Survey also attributed the flooding to a glacial collapse.
Among the missing are 933 hydropower workers, including those trapped in a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydroelectric site. Nepali army engineers inserted a pipe into the tunnel on Sunday, allowing air to be pumped in, Home Minister Sudan Gurung said . Overnight rain had earlier filled the excavation area, temporarily halting efforts.
Nepal has requested international assistance for specialized tasks, including DNA testing, body identification, and tunnel rescues, but stated it does not need foreign support for general search and rescue operations. Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said Nepal sought help reopening transport and communication links, with India already sending relief supplies and a tunnel rescue team .
The missing include 589 foreigners in Nepal, among them trekkers and Hindu pilgrims en route to Tibet’s Mount Kailash. Spain’s Foreign Ministry confirmed two Spanish citizens missing, while Portugal’s ministry had previously reported six missing in Nepal, with three later found alive . China’s list of missing foreigners includes 104 Nepali, 49 Indian, and 33 Latvian nationals .
More than 3,700 people have been rescued in Nepal so far, while seven bodies recovered in India are believed to be flood victims swept downstream . The U.S. has pledged $3.6 million in humanitarian aid to Nepal, following an initial $500,000 commitment .
