Six people have died after an explosion destroyed a two-storey residential building in Athens’ Plaka district on Friday, the Greek fire brigade confirmed on Saturday. The victims include four American tourists, a British national, and a Greek national, identified as an elderly couple living in the building.

The blast, which Athens Mayor Haris Doukas said was likely caused by a gas leak, collapsed the building near the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Emergency crews, assisted by rescue dogs and thermal imaging cameras, recovered all six bodies by Saturday afternoon. The tourists—two American couples—had been expected to check in for a flight from Athens airport at 3 p.m. local time on Friday but never arrived, a police source told Reuters .

The explosion damaged neighboring buildings, with debris scattered across nearby streets. Three people were injured, and authorities evacuated some structures due to structural concerns. Doukas described the incident as an “incredible disaster” and noted that investigators from the fire brigade’s crime unit were on site to determine the exact cause .

A UK Foreign Office spokesperson said they were aware of the suspected explosion and in contact with local authorities . The building’s collapse also prompted concerns about the stability of adjacent structures, with Doukas stating that some may need to be demolished .
