Gunmen open fire on man in Ayia Napa in suspected targeted attack: police probe link to jailed murderer

Police in Famagusta are investigating an attempted murder after unknown gunmen opened fire on a 33-year-old man in Ayia Napa early Friday, according to authorities.
The shooting occurred at around 5:40 a.m. in the Kokkines area, where the victim was driving his car. Police sources said the attackers lay in wait for him a few meters from his home before firing as he attempted to turn right, striking his vehicle multiple times. The man was not injured, though his car sustained damage.
Assessments by investigators suggest the attackers intended to kill the victim, who had no prior police record. Authorities believe the target may have been the brother of a man serving a life sentence for a quadruple murder in Ayia Napa in June 2016. One scenario under investigation is that the shooting was meant to send a message to the convicted man, according to police sources .
Shortly after the attack, a car was found burning in an open area in Avgorou. Police are examining whether it was the vehicle used by the gunmen. Both the shooting site and the location of the burned car have been cordoned off, with forensic examinations underway by Famagusta CID and the Criminal Investigation Service of Police Headquarters.
Investigators are focusing on gathering evidence to identify the perpetrators, including reviewing CCTV footage and collecting witness statements from local residents. The case remains under active investigation.
