Polish tennis player Maja Chwalińska and British Sonay Kartal will face each other in the Wuhan Open final on Sunday after both won their semi-finals on Saturday.

Chwalińska, a French Open finalist, defeated world No. 9 and compatriot Iga Świątek 7-5, 6-1. Świątek, who led 5-3 in the first set, required a medical timeout for a left-leg injury and struggled with movement afterward. “She is a great champion, a living legend, she won everything. So, it was a great honor for me to share the court with her today,” Chwalińska said. “The fact that I actually won against her is actually crazy for me” .

Kartal, ranked 170th, overcame former Grand Slam champion Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-5) in a match where she saved three set points in each set. “At times she’s unplayable and sometimes you just have to ride the wave. Mentally, I think this is one of the best performances I’ve had in my career,” Kartal said .

The final will be the first WTA 1000 championship match for both players. Chwalińska, seeded 16th, previously reached the Roland Garros final this year, while Kartal won a WTA 250 title in Monastir in 2024 . The match is scheduled to begin at 12:30 local time .
