
Five climbers from Bosnia and Herzegovina have died on Mount Elbrus, the highest mountain in Europe, due to adverse weather conditions. The incident occurred over the weekend, with Russian authorities confirming the deaths on Sunday.
The climbers were part of a seven-member expedition from the central Bosnian town of Zenica. According to Russian authorities, two climbers were rescued and taken for medical care, while the bodies of the five deceased climbers have not yet been fully evacuated due to continuing bad weather.
Mount Elbrus, which stands at 5,642 meters (18,510 feet) just north of the border with Georgia, is known for its sudden changes in weather and challenging climbing conditions. The dormant volcano is the tenth-most prominent peak in the world and attracts climbers from around the globe.
The regional branch of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation stated that the climbers strayed from their route due to rapidly deteriorating weather conditions. One of the surviving climbers managed to descend and alert authorities about the situation.
Bosnia's foreign minister, Elmedin Konakovic, confirmed the deaths and described the event as a "major tragedy." The climbers included a married couple and a female doctor who worked at a local hospital in Zenica.
Russian media reported that strong winds and adverse weather conditions have complicated the search and recovery operations. The bodies of two climbers were located at an altitude of 5,350 meters (17,550 feet) and were evacuated when weather conditions allowed.
The Russian Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured climbers a speedy recovery.
Mount Elbrus is infamous for its dangerous conditions, with an average of 15 to 30 deaths annually. The mountain's cable car system allows visitors to reach heights of 12,500 feet with relative ease, but the final ascent to the summit is challenging due to the elevation and strong winds.
