Western Balkan leaders and EU officials discuss integration and stability at UN General Assembly
Western Balkan leaders and European Union officials held discussions on EU integration and regional stability on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, expressing confidence that Serbia would remain on its path toward EU membership regardless of the outcome of upcoming snap parliamentary elections. “In a brief conversation with Ursula von der Leyen, I had the opportunity to express my sincere gratitude for everything she has done for Serbia over the past few years. I believe that regardless of the election results, Serbia will accelerate its path toward full membership in the European Union,” Vučić said .
Montenegrin Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ervin Ibrahimović met with UK Special Envoy for the Western Balkans Karen Pierce, emphasizing that a stable and secure Western Balkans is a shared interest of Montenegro and the UK. Ibrahimović highlighted Montenegro’s commitment to EU integration, regional stability, and reconciliation, noting the country’s alignment with EU foreign and security policy .
Ibrahimović also met with UN Special Adviser on Genocide Prevention Alice Wairimu Nderitu, reaffirming Montenegro’s dedication to EU membership and European values. He underscored the importance of genocide prevention, education, and confronting the past to ensure lasting peace and reconciliation in the region .
North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, addressing the Concordia Summit in New York, criticized some EU member states for attempting to use the integration process to alter North Macedonia’s national identity rather than its institutions . Mickoski also met with Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša to discuss North Macedonia’s European perspective and regional cooperation .
