A short-lived cool snap is bringing scattered storms and a sharp temperature divide across Europe today, as meteorologists warn of a third regional heatwave building in the southeast while northern areas remain unseasonably cool. The contrast is starkest in the Netherlands, where the southeast is bracing for the country’s third regional heatwave of the summer even as the north stays under 20 °C.
In Romania, the National Meteorological Administration (ANM) reported “slight atmospheric instability” across most of the country, with afternoon and evening thunderstorms expected in Banat, Crișana, Maramureș and much of Transylvania. Florinela Georgescu, ANM forecasting director, told Digi24 that “instability will persist through mid-week before temperatures climb again.” Forecasts show 10–15 litres per square metre of rain, locally up to 20–30 l/mp, with wind gusts of 40–60 km/h in the mountains and isolated hail. Bucharest will see a high of 31 °C with possible light showers after dark, while overnight lows dip to 15–18 °C. “Patchy fog is also possible in places,” Georgescu added .
Across Central Europe, Germany’s Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) warned of “scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms” in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, with highs of just 22–26 °C and overnight lows of 14–17 °C. “Cloudy and at times rainy Monday will give way to drier conditions on Tuesday,” the DWD said, forecasting 22–28 °C by midweek . In Bavaria, temperatures will climb back to 23–30 °C by Wednesday, though strong westerly winds will keep conditions breezy .
Slovakia is split between warm south and cool north. Western regions and the Žilina region face scattered rain and isolated storms, with gusty winds and possible hail. Southern areas will reach 27 °C, while the north and Spiš plateau struggle to 17–22 °C; at 1,500 metres altitude, temperatures hover around 11 °C. “Gusts can suddenly intensify in storm cells,” meteorologists cautioned .
Hungary’s meteorological service issued nationwide storm warnings, citing “strong or locally storm-force gusts” accompanying incoming thunderstorms from the west . Latvia, too, expects downpours and thunderstorms, with Riga seeing highs near 19 °C and gusts up to 15 m/s .
Denmark’s meteorologists at the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) noted Monday’s “autumn-like” feel—clouds, rain and temperatures below 20 °C—but forecast sunshine and rising warmth later in the week . In Cyprus, morning mist will clear to partly cloudy skies with isolated afternoon storms, mainly over mountains and the interior, where temperatures could still reach 35 °C inland .
The sharp thermal divide is most pronounced in the Netherlands, where the southeast is on the brink of a third regional heatwave even as the north remains cool. RTL weather editors described “large temperature differences from north to south,” with the southeast set to see summery highs while the north stays relatively chilly .
