The three frontrunners for Germany’s Youth Word of the Year 2026 are “Crashout,” “Ragebait,” and “Peak,” with the winner to be announced Saturday at the Frankfurt Book Fair, according to publisher Langenscheidt, which organized the vote.
Young Germans aged 11 to 20 cast votes in the mid six-figure range, with the top three terms collectively attracting 43 percent of all submissions. “Crashout” describes losing control or emotionally exploding, often used ironically for trivial triggers, the Langenscheidt jury said. “Ragebait” refers to social media posts designed to provoke outrage, leveraging algorithms that boost content with high engagement. “Peak” denotes the highest quality or an absolute highlight, the jury explained.
The publisher’s spokesperson noted the surprise absence of “67” (Six Seven), a viral TikTok trend tied to a hand gesture and a U.S. rapper’s song, from the top three, despite expectations it would rank highly. The Youth Word of the Year has been selected annually by Langenscheidt since 2008.
