Wildfire forces 42,000 evacuations in Nevada as 800 firefighters battle blaze near Reno

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County on Sunday as the human-caused Hawk Fire rapidly expanded to more than 10,500 acres near Reno, threatening residential neighborhoods and prompting evacuation orders for approximately 90,000 residents.
Authorities ordered 42,000 people to evacuate immediately, while another 45,000 were told to prepare to leave, according to emergency responders’ updates on Facebook. The fire, which began Saturday morning near Hawk Meadow Trail, has injured six people, including three firefighters, and destroyed several homes, officials said .
By Sunday, the blaze had scorched over 6,000 hectares, fueled by hot, dry, and windy conditions, said Pete Bryant of the Reno Fire Department. “Our weather conditions remain difficult. Hot, dry, windy—and there’s no end in sight for now,” Bryant stated .
The fire spread quickly through grass and brush in the hilly region on Reno’s outskirts, near the California border. About 800 firefighters were deployed, with support from California, which sent specialized teams and equipment. The Reno-Stead Airport was closed to public traffic and repurposed as a base for firefighting aircraft, while Reno-Tahoe International Airport remained operational .
Schools in the affected area canceled classes for Monday. The Washoe County School District announced the closure as the fire continued to threaten communities, including areas near the University of Nevada, Reno .
Investigators confirmed the fire was human-caused but provided no further details, stating the probe was ongoing. The blaze, which has left thousands without power, remains uncontained, with winds expected to strengthen again after a brief overnight lull .
Local casinos and hotels offered discounted lodging to evacuees, while the National Guard was activated under the state of emergency declaration. The fire’s rapid spread has been attributed to a combination of prolonged drought, high temperatures, and unpredictable winds .
