Brazil recalled its ambassador to Argentina on Sunday after Argentine President Javier Milei insulted Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during a political event in São Paulo.
Milei, speaking at the nomination convention of right-wing presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, called Lula a "thief" and a "prisoner" and urged voters to reject what he described as Latin America's "socialist scum." The remarks prompted Brazil's foreign ministry to summon Argentina's ambassador for an explanation and recall its own ambassador from Buenos Aires for consultations.
"There is no precedent for a foreign president, on national territory, to hurl insults and offences at the head of state, democratic institutions, including the judiciary, and the Brazilian people," Brazil's foreign ministry said in a statement, describing the incident as the most serious diplomatic rift between the two nations in decades.
Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, launched his presidential bid on Saturday at a convention in São Paulo, where he used an AI-generated video of his imprisoned father and an appearance by Milei to rally support. The elder Bolsonaro, who was imprisoned for an attempted coup in 2022, is serving his sentence under house arrest for health reasons.
Milei had planned to visit Jair Bolsonaro during his trip but was barred by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, whom Milei referred to as "bald trash" in his speech.
At the event, Milei also accused the Brazilian government, along with Mexico and the U.S. Democratic Party, of funding a "campaign against Argentina." He was apparently referring to criticism of Argentina's football team during the recent World Cup.
Brazil's foreign ministry described Milei's remarks as an unprecedented attack on the country's democratic institutions. "In Brazil, we do not accept anyone putting their nose where it is not requested," Lula said at an event with unionists, without directly naming Milei.
The diplomatic rift is considered the most serious between the two South American neighbors in decades. Brazil is Argentina's largest trading partner, and the two countries are key players in Latin American politics.
Flávio Bolsonaro's presidential bid is seen as an attempt to continue his father's political legacy. Jair Bolsonaro, who served as president from 2019 to 2022, was imprisoned for his role in an attempted coup. His son's campaign has been marked by strong support from right-wing figures in the region, including Milei.
In response to Milei's remarks, Brazil's foreign ministry said it would not tolerate interference in its internal affairs. The ministry also summoned Argentina's ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Raimondi, to express its outrage and demand an explanation.
The incident has raised tensions ahead of Brazil's presidential election in October, where Lula is seeking re-election for the leftist Workers' Party, and Flávio Bolsonaro is his main challenger.
In a related development, Brazil's Foreign Ministry announced on Saturday that it had denied visas to two U.S. State Department officials who sought to travel to the country next week. The move comes amid tensions between Brazil and the United States over Brazil's upcoming elections.
