Turkish police arrested dozens of protesters in Istanbul on Tuesday during a demonstration against nationwide raids targeting LGBTQ+ activists, associations and businesses over the weekend.
The protest outside the Çağlayan courthouse was swiftly dispersed after police declared it illegal, detaining demonstrators and two journalists. Activists chanted slogans including “Against Hate, For Life!” and “What Morality? Whose Morality?” before officers moved in, according to reports .
The raids, conducted under the banner “My Family Is Safe,” led to the detention of at least 60 people across 15 provinces, with investigations opened against 162 suspects, nine associations and 13 companies, Justice Minister Akin Gürlek announced. Authorities accused those detained of “obscenity” and “prostitution,” while social media accounts and websites of LGBTQ+ groups, journalists and human rights organizations were blocked .
The crackdown is linked to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s “Decade of Family and Population” initiative, which seeks to reinforce traditional family values. Feminist activist Feride Eralp said six LGBTQ+ associations in Istanbul were raided, with more than 20 arrested and over 30 detained in the city alone .
Amnesty International condemned the arrests, stating they had “nothing to do with the protection of the family” and were instead aimed at further stigmatizing the LGBTQ+ community. The Council of Europe’s human rights commissioner, Michael O’Flaherty, expressed concern, saying references to “family values” and “child protection” could not justify restrictions on human rights .
