Google Maps began displaying Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for users in the United States on Sunday, following an executive order by President Donald Trump to rename the body of water in U.S. federal records.
The change aligns with the U.S. Geographic Names Information System, which updated its entry after Trump signed the order on Aug. 28. Google confirmed in a blog post that U.S. users now see “Lake America,” while those in Canada continue to see “Lake Ontario,” and users outside both countries see both names. The company cited its policy of reflecting official government sources for geographic names.
The renaming applies only within U.S. federal databases and domestic mapping systems. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the change, stating on social media that the name Ontario derives from the Indigenous Wendat word *Ontari’io*, meaning “the lake is beautiful, the lake is great,” and predates both Canada and the United States. Ontario Premier Doug Ford called the move “absolutely backwards” in an interview with ABC’s “This Week,” adding, “No one’s going to call it Lake of America.”
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the state would not adopt the new name, and Vermont Governor Phil Scott, a Republican, described the decision as “petty and disappointing.” Apple Maps has not updated its labeling and still shows the lake as “Lake Ontario” for U.S. users as of Sunday.
The dispute follows escalating trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada. Earlier this month, Trump imposed 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods after negotiations stalled, and Canada retaliated with similar measures. Trump has also unilaterally renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” in U.S. records, a change Google Maps adopted last year, though Apple Maps did not.
The lake, bordered by the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York, remains designated as Lake Ontario in Canadian federal documents, nautical charts, and school curricula. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names updated federal systems to reflect the new nomenclature under Trump’s directive.
