Italian singer-songwriter Francesco Guccini dies at 86 in Tuscany hamlet, family announces

Francesco Guccini, the Italian singer-songwriter and literary figure, died on Thursday in Pavana, a hamlet in the municipality of Sambuca Pistoiese, at the age of 86, his family announced. The funeral will be held in private in the coming days, in accordance with his wishes, while a public commemorative ceremony is planned for September .
Guccini was born in Modena on June 14, 1940, and spent much of his life in the Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany regions, with deep ties to Pavana, where he lived in recent years. He began his career in the 1960s as a songwriter for artists including Caterina Caselli, Equipe 84, and I Nomadi, penning songs such as *Auschwitz* and *Dio è morto*. His debut album, *Folk beat n. 1*, was released in 1967, but his breakthrough came in 1972 with *Radici*, featuring iconic tracks like *La locomotiva*, *Incontro*, *Il vecchio e il bambino*, and *Piccola città* .
His 1976 album *Via Paolo Fabbri 43* marked a commercial success, including the song *L’avvelenata*, a response to criticism from fellow artists. Guccini’s work often blended literary references—from Borges to Cervantes and the Bible—with social commentary, earning him the nickname *il Maestrone* for his mastery of language and his distinctive, gravelly voice .
Guccini’s songs, such as *Auschwitz* and *Canzone per un’amica*, became anthems for generations, addressing themes of memory, social justice, and the passage of time. He was also a prolific writer, publishing over 20 books, and worked as a teacher and journalist. In later years, due to vision problems, he shifted his focus from music to literature. His final studio album, *Canzoni da intorto*, was released in 2022, followed by a 2023 re-recording of *Bella Ciao* with singer Tosca .
Tributes poured in from across Italy, with fans gathering outside his former home on Via Paolo Fabbri 43 in Bologna, leaving flowers and notes. Former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi, who knew Guccini well, recalled their frequent discussions about politics and the Apennines, noting that Guccini had recently expressed weariness with life but remained focused on his next book .
A posthumous book, *Calde le pere!*, is set for release in September by publisher Giunti .
