Germany submits Sandra Wollners Cannes-winning film Everytime for Oscar race
Germany has submitted the German-Austrian film *Everytime* by Austrian director Sandra Wollner as its entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, German Films, the country’s foreign film representation, announced in Munich on Aug. 25 .
The film, Wollner’s third feature after *Das unmögliche Bild* and *The Trouble with Being Born*, won the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Feature Film at the Sarajevo Film Festival on Aug. 18 and the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year . It follows Ella and her younger daughter Melli as they navigate daily life a year after the sudden death of their older daughter Jessie, with a trip to Tenerife resurfacing repressed emotions. The cast includes Birgit Minichmayr, Carla Hüttermann and Tristán López, with cinematography by Gregory Oke .
An independent jury selected *Everytime* over other contenders, praising its portrayal of grief. “With *Everytime*, director and author Sandra Wollner achieves the feat of making grief tangible as a state of a world out of joint, using purely cinematic means and surprising lightness,” the jury stated. It also commended the camerawork for creating a “shimmering, at times detached atmosphere” without overshadowing the characters, and lauded the ensemble’s naturalistic performances .
This year marks the first time up to three German productions could vie for the award due to a rule change: films that win major festival prizes are now automatically eligible for submission. *Gelbe Briefe* by İlker Çatak, which won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, and *Von Scham und Geld* by Visar Morina, recipient of the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, are also qualified, though their production companies must still formally submit them .
The Academy will announce a 15-film shortlist on Dec. 15, with five nominees revealed on Jan. 21, 2027. The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 14, 2027, in Los Angeles . Under new Academy rules, the film itself is now the official nominee, with the director accepting the award on behalf of the creative team .
