Chinese humanoid robots break human sprint, high jump records at Beijing games

Chinese humanoid robots shattered human athletic records on the opening day of the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing on Saturday, with a robot completing the 100-meter sprint in 9.39 seconds, surpassing Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second world record set in 2009.
The event, held at the National Speed Skating Oval, featured more than 2,000 humanoid robots from 666 teams across 16 countries, competing in 51 disciplines, including running, table tennis, soccer, and industrial tasks. A robot from Beijing-based X-Humanoid also achieved a standing high jump of 2.88 meters, exceeding Javier Sotomayor’s human record of 2.45 meters from 1993. Both records were set during the opening ceremonies, where hundreds of robots marched in synchronized formation.
Earlier, a humanoid robot named Lightning, developed by Chinese smartphone maker Honor, recorded a 100-meter sprint in 9.32 seconds during a preparatory test, reaching a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second, according to state broadcaster CCTV. Lightning had previously set a half-marathon record of 50 minutes and 26 seconds in April, outperforming the human world best of 57 minutes and 20 seconds.
The games coincide with the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing, where companies showcased around 3,000 products, including humanoid robots. China produces the majority of the world’s humanoid robots, but the U.S. has increased scrutiny of such technology. Last month, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission banned imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots on national security grounds, targeting China. The Pentagon also added Unitree, a leading Chinese robot maker, to a list of companies with alleged ties to the Chinese military. Beijing has denied the accusations.
In Saturday’s 100-meter heats, Tiangong Ultra, developed by the Beijing Innovation Centre of Humanoid Robotics, won its race in 9.39 seconds, followed by Honor’s Shandian at 9.47 seconds and Unitree’s robot at 12.41 seconds. Videos showed robots colliding with protective barriers after finishing, with some requiring removal from the track.
The second edition of the games, running through Wednesday, includes events testing both athletic and practical skills, such as weightlifting, martial arts, and manufacturing simulations. Organizers said the expanded program aims to assess robots’ abilities in real-world scenarios, though experts noted most are still used primarily for demonstrations and research.
