An oil tanker was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman early Tuesday, disabling its engine room and leaving the vessel immobile, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations. The crew was confirmed safe, but the environmental impact remains unclear France 24 Yeni Safak ORF.
The incident occurred 9 nautical miles northeast of Ash Shishah, Oman, UKMTO reported. Authorities have not identified the tanker’s flag, ownership, or destination, nor have they determined the responsible party El Mundo Protothema.
The attack follows a separate strike on another tanker in the Red Sea west of Saudi Arabia just hours earlier. Maritime traffic in both the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf has been disrupted by the Iran war, with Tehran targeting what it describes as U.S.-aligned vessels in the region SVT.
Since the conflict began six months ago, 68 incidents involving commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz have been recorded, according to the U.N.’s International Organization for Migration. Of these, UKMTO classified 47 as attacks. At least 20 sailors and port workers have been killed, 35 injured, and one remains missing SVT.
Iran has effectively blockaded the strait since late February, when the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran. Tehran has demanded tolls for passage and attacked ships it accuses of bypassing its preferred routes France 24.
The latest incident coincides with Oman’s foreign minister visiting Iran on Tuesday to discuss the contested waterway. On Monday, Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran as Islamabad attempts to mediate the conflict France 24.
Maritime authorities have advised vessels to exercise caution and report suspicious activity to UKMTO. Investigations into the attack are ongoing El Mundo.
