A 21-year-old woman died Saturday in a DIY bungee-jumping accident in Warstein, Germany, after colliding with a rock face, police said.
The woman and her companions had constructed their own bungee-jumping apparatus in a former quarry in North Rhine-Westphalia, according to a police spokesperson. She struck the cliff wall during the jump and sustained fatal injuries. Emergency responders attempted resuscitation but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial reports suggested a climbing accident with a 15-meter fall, but police later corrected the account, confirming the bungee-jumping setup. The incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. local time. The woman, from Aschersleben in Saxony-Anhalt, was with four others in an official climbing area with designated routes.
Authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the accident. The four companions received psychological support from emergency chaplains. Police did not specify how the homemade equipment failed or what caused the collision with the rock face.
