Jannik Sinner, the world No. 1 men’s tennis player, withdrew from the Cincinnati Open on Sunday due to a right knee injury, tournament officials announced. The Italian, who also skipped the Montreal Masters last week, said in a statement released by the ATP that he made the decision after consulting with his doctors and team.
“After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati,” Sinner said. “My right knee has been bothering me and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I’m not ready to compete yet.”
The Cincinnati Open, a key warm-up event for the US Open, begins Thursday. Sinner’s withdrawal follows that of world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, who cited a lingering wrist injury. Both players will now miss the tournament, which runs Aug. 13–23.
Sinner, 24, has not competed since winning his second consecutive Wimbledon title last month. He had been on a six-tournament winning streak at the ATP Masters 1000 level before the North American hard-court swing. The Cincinnati Open organizers wished him well in a post on X, stating, “Wishing all the best to our 2024 champion and can’t wait to see you again next year!”
The US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season, starts Aug. 30 in New York. Sinner said he is now focusing on preparing for the event, though he has not played a hard-court match since Wimbledon. In 2024, he won the Cincinnati title before claiming the US Open crown.
Alcaraz, 23, has been sidelined since April with a wrist injury. The Spaniard defeated Sinner in the 2025 US Open final and will attempt to defend his title later this month. With both top players absent, Alexander Zverev, the 2021 Olympic champion, is now the highest-seeded player in Cincinnati.
Sinner’s medical team, including Dr. Luca Semperboni of the Italian Tennis Federation and Davis Cup squad, has been treating his knee in recent days. The Italian was seen at clinics in Milan and Turin last week, according to Italian media reports .
