Meanwhile, in France, Marseille also kicked off their Ligue 1 campaign with a 4-0 win over Strasbourg. Algerian international Amine Gouiri scored a second-half double, while Keyliane Abdallah and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg added the other goals .

The opening weekend of European football also saw significant off-field incidents. In Germany, violent clashes erupted during the DFB-Pokal match between Waldhof Mannheim and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, leaving 35 police officers injured and 85 fans requiring medical attention. Eight fans were hospitalized, and multiple arrests were made. Authorities deployed 1,400 officers to the match, which Kaiserslautern won 1-0 after extra time .

The German Football Association (DFB) announced it would review the incidents, with Baden-Württemberg’s interior minister condemning the violence and describing those involved as “not fans, but criminals” .
