Belgian federal prosecutors are investigating former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt over the supervision of European Parliament interns during his tenure as leader of the liberal ALDE group from 2009 to 2019, according to a report first published by Belgian magazine Knack.

The probe, now conducted by Belgian authorities on behalf of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), centers on Verhofstadt’s oversight of parliamentary interns during his chairmanship. An EU official familiar with the matter confirmed the investigation to POLITICO, stating it was initiated by OLAF and EPPO before being transferred to Belgian prosecutors .

ALDE, the liberal group Verhofstadt led, was succeeded by Renew Europe after the 2019 European elections. The investigation remains ongoing, with no public details yet on the specific allegations or potential rule violations under scrutiny .
