Carlos Alcaraz returned to Grand Slam action on Monday with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Russia’s Roman Safiullin in the first round of the U.S. Open, marking his first singles match since April after a right wrist injury sidelined him for 139 days. The 23-year-old Spaniard, the No. 2 seed and defending champion, showed no visible discomfort, wearing a compression sleeve on his right arm while unleashing 28 winners, including his signature forehand .
Alcaraz acknowledged pre-match nerves but said his body responded well. “I don’t know how it looked from outside, but from inside, my feeling was that I was hitting normal,” he told reporters. “I was playing pretty normal, playing my style, and yeah, the arm, the wrist, everything felt great” . He celebrated points with clenched fists and cries of “vamos,” at one stage singing along to a Michael Jackson song during a changeover. In the final game, he gestured to the crowd for more noise after a drop shot winner .
The win extended Alcaraz’s Grand Slam match winning streak to 15, though he admitted rust in the early stages, committing 12 unforced errors in the first set. “It’s been five very difficult months for me,” he said. “The fact that I can be here and compete… I couldn’t have returned in a better place than New York” . He next faces Portugal’s Jaime Faria, who defeated American Jenson Brooksby .
Alcaraz’s return follows a summer in which he missed the French Open and Wimbledon, watching rivals Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner claim those titles. The U.S. Open field was further upended on Sunday when No. 4 Novak Djokovic lost in the first round for the first time in his career at Flushing Meadows, ending a 19-0 streak in opening matches .
Earlier on Arthur Ashe Stadium, two-time defending women’s champion Aryna Sabalenka opened her campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Colombia’s Camila Osorio. Sabalenka, bidding to become the first player to win three straight U.S. Open titles since Serena Williams (2012-14), has reached the final in each of the past three years .
