Carlos Alcaraz returned to Grand Slam action on Monday, defeating Russia’s Roman Safiullin 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the U.S. Open. The 23-year-old Spaniard, the defending champion and No. 2 seed, played his first singles match in 139 days after a right wrist injury sidelined him since April. He wore a compression sleeve on his right arm but showed no visible discomfort, unleashing 28 winners, including his trademark forehand .
“I felt great. I don’t know how it looked from outside, but from inside, my feeling was that I was hitting normal,” Alcaraz said. “I was playing pretty normal, playing my style, and everything felt great.” He added that his goal was to “compete, to enjoy” and that he did not know how far he would advance in the tournament .
Alcaraz’s victory followed Aryna Sabalenka’s opening win, as the two-time defending women’s champion began her bid for a third straight U.S. Open title. Sabalenka defeated Camila Osorio 6-4, 6-4 on Arthur Ashe Stadium, aiming to become the first player since Serena Williams (2012-14) to achieve the three-peat .
The men’s draw saw a major upset on Sunday when No. 4 Novak Djokovic lost in the first round for the first time in his U.S. Open career, ending a 19-0 streak in opening matches at Flushing Meadows . Top-ranked Jannik Sinner is also sidelined by a knee injury, leaving Alcaraz as a leading contender if he remains healthy.
Alcaraz celebrated each point with fist pumps and cries of “vamos,” engaging the crowd and even singing along to a Michael Jackson song during a changeover. “I missed the crowd, the energy, the competition—I missed everything,” he said in his on-court interview .
The U.S. Open also featured the debut of 17-year-old Thea Frodin, who earned a wild card into the main draw by winning the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 18s National Championships. Frodin, a Los Angeles native, previously served as Serena Williams’ body double in the 2021 film *King Richard* and will face Elena Rybakina in the first round .
Stan Wawrinka, the 2016 U.S. Open champion, played his final Grand Slam match, marking the end of a career that included three major titles .
