The death toll from last month's twin earthquakes in Venezuela has climbed to 5,119, with authorities reporting more than 16,700 injuries and massive displacement as recovery operations continue across the devastated South American nation.
The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes, which struck on June 24 within a minute of each other, caused widespread destruction, damaging 856 buildings, including 190 that collapsed completely. The devastation has left 17,907 people displaced, according to official reports. Venezuela has received $346 million from the International Monetary Fund to support recovery and reconstruction efforts.
The coastal state of La Guaira, located near the capital Caracas, was among the hardest-hit areas. Rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities continuing to recover bodies from the rubble of collapsed buildings. The United Nations estimates that up to 50,000 people may still be missing following the disaster.
In a separate incident, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck central Peru on Saturday, causing damage to several buildings and resulting in at least one death and multiple injuries, according to local reports. The earthquake occurred in the region of Junín, south of the town of Chupaca, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
