Festival cancels Alphaville over political speech ban as German music event opens
The Glücksgefühle music festival begins Thursday at the Hockenheimring in Baden-Württemberg, featuring acts like David Guetta, No Angels, Marteria and Mark Forster over three days. Organized by former soccer star Lukas Podolski and music manager Markus Krampe, the event has drawn controversy after Alphaville’s scheduled Friday performance was canceled on Wednesday.
The band announced on social media that organizers barred them from making political statements on stage, calling the restriction a “muzzle decree” reminiscent of dictatorships. Alphaville condemned the move as an “absolutely unbearable and shocking” violation of free speech and artistic freedom, vowing to continue advocating for democracy and tolerance. The statement added that such values must be defended “by all legal means, especially by artists.”
Festival organizers rejected the band’s account, calling Alphaville’s behavior “unacceptable” and insisting the event must remain “completely apolitical,” according to a statement from the Markus Krampe Entertainment Group to Tagesspiegel .
