Trump administration pauses border wall construction in Texass Big Bend National Park

The Trump administration temporarily paused border wall construction in Big Bend National Park in Texas on Monday, as U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott announced he would conduct an on-the-ground evaluation of the site.
Scott said in a video posted to X that he had halted all construction activity in the park until he could visit, meet with stakeholders, and consult local law enforcement. “CBP is pausing all construction activity in Big Bend National Park while I visit and conduct a personal, on-the-ground evaluation,” he wrote. Scott added that he would “listen to local leadership, community members and stakeholders” over the coming days to address what he described as “real” national security threats while balancing park preservation efforts .
The project has faced bipartisan opposition, with critics arguing it damages the park’s pristine environment. Opponents, including Democratic and Republican sheriffs, former national park officials, and local residents, have noted that the rugged terrain already deters smugglers and migrants. Border encounters in Big Bend have historically been lower than in other sectors and have declined further in recent years .
Customs and Border Protection had previously scaled back plans to build a 30-foot bollard wall through the park but continued with other measures, including new roads, lighting, vehicle barriers, and buried fiber optic cables. Congress allocated $46 billion last summer for wall construction from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico, and Scott has stated he expects the first layer to be completed by the end of next year .
The administration has not specified how long the pause will last or whom Scott will meet during his visit. Customs and Border Protection did not respond to requests for further details .
