Drone explodes near Bulgarian gas pipeline after entering from Romania: Germany probes six flights over military base
A drone entered Bulgarian airspace from Romania on Saturday morning and exploded near the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, which connects Turkey to Ukraine, Bulgarian Prime Minister Roumen Radev announced. The explosion occurred near the Kardam border crossing in northeastern Bulgaria, about 1,000 meters from a pipeline compression station, with no reported injuries .
In Germany, authorities reported six unauthorized drone flights over a Bundeswehr base in Mechernich, near Bonn, between Thursday night and Friday morning. The facility, known as the "Patriot-Werft," is Germany’s only site for repairing Patriot air defense systems and houses a high-security underground logistics complex. Police and military personnel observed at least one drone, identified as a Fly-380 VTOL model, circling above emergency services. Investigations are underway by Germany’s Military Counterintelligence Service and the Joint Drone Defence Centre in Berlin .
The incidents follow the discovery of an explosive-laden drone near a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport on Aug. 6, which temporarily shut down the facility and diverted flights. U.S. intelligence has since assessed that the drone may be linked to the Russian government, according to reports . Russia’s embassy in Berlin denied involvement, calling the allegations a "fabricated provocation" .
German authorities have not yet determined the origin of the Leipzig drone, but the public prosecutor’s office stated there is sufficient evidence to investigate. The base in Mechernich remains under scrutiny after multiple sightings, with police suspecting unauthorized surveillance of military facilities .
Bulgarian officials confirmed the drone entered its territory at 8:10 a.m. local time and detonated approximately 100 meters inside the border. The area is near critical energy infrastructure, including the Trans-Balkan pipeline .
