Russia launched a massive wave of drone and missile strikes on Kyiv on Wednesday, killing at least two people and injuring 45 others as explosions rocked the Ukrainian capital throughout the day and into the night.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the attacks, which began in the early morning, had killed two and wounded 43 by 5 p.m. local time, with drones striking the Holosiivskyi, Darnitskyi and Solomianskyi districts. A fire engulfed the historic Shayba market near Kyiv Central Station, while railway infrastructure and residential buildings were also damaged, according to Ukrzaliznytsia chairman Oleksandr Pertsovskyi .
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia targeted civilian and critical infrastructure, including pharmaceutical facilities, gas stations, railways and communications hubs. He noted strikes had also hit eight other regions across Ukraine .
The assault continued into the evening, with ballistic missiles reported over Kyiv as air defenses engaged incoming threats. Monitoring channels counted at least 14 missiles in the first three waves, with multiple explosions heard across the city . Internet outages affected around 100,000 households in Kyiv and its surrounding region following the strikes .
EU Ambassador to Ukraine Mathernova described working from the bloc’s Kyiv delegation as columns of smoke were visible from office windows since early morning .
