Serbian President Vučić calls early parliamentary elections for October 25 after dissolving parliament
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced on Tuesday that early parliamentary elections will be held on Oct. 25, more than a year ahead of schedule, following the dissolution of the National Assembly.
In a televised interview on state broadcaster RTS, Vučić said he would sign the decree dissolving parliament on Wednesday and formally call the vote. The government had proposed the dissolution on Monday, paving the way for the snap election. “Elections in Serbia will be held on October 25,” Vučić said. “I believe that we will finally manage to get out of this crisis after the elections” La Croix.
The vote follows months of pressure from a student-led protest movement that began after the deadly collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad in November 2024, which killed 16 people. Demonstrations initially demanded a transparent investigation but later expanded into broader calls for early elections and an end to corruption. Vučić had previously signaled the possibility of early elections, including in August, and in June said he would resign “in a few weeks” ORF.
Vučić, who has served as either prime minister or president for over a decade, indicated he would step down as president after calling the elections to run for prime minister. He urged all participants in the 45-day campaign to avoid violence and focus on voters’ needs. “I know some will blockade university buildings again, and I ask them not to,” he said. “If they do, they will be hurting themselves and the people of Serbia” Meduza.
The ruling Serbian Progressive Party will contest the election under the banner “Aleksandar Vučić – United Serbia,” with Vučić as its prime ministerial candidate 444.hu. The next regularly scheduled parliamentary elections had been set for December 2027.
