President Nicușor Dan summoned party leaders to Cotroceni on Friday evening as PNL, USR and UDMR formally nominated euro-deputy Siegfried Mureșan for prime minister, setting up a high-stakes showdown with the Social Democrats over who can command a parliamentary majority. The three parties asked PSD to accept a swap of candidates—Sorin Grindeanu for Mureșan—while Dan set a Tuesday deadline for a new government to be installed at Victoria Palace.
Mureșan, 45, vice-president of the European People’s Party and a PNL vice-president since Sunday, presented himself as the candidate of “action” rather than “declarations,” insisting Romania needs a pro-European government that delivers results. Ilie Bolojan, PNL president, called Mureșan “attached to European values” and a solution that could unlock dialogue with PSD. UDMR senator Lorand Turos framed the nomination as the right of the centre-right bloc to propose an alternative to PSD.
PSD immediately accused the three parties of “total irresponsible political blocking,” reiterating its own claim to govern and dismissing Mureșan as a tactical move to “spoil the Social Democrats’ calculations.” Vice-president Diana Tușa said PNL and USR were “mocking Romania” after weeks of insisting they would never govern with PSD. PSD deputy Natalia Intotero labelled Mureșan “the prime minister nobody elected but who appears on lists of offices.”
AUR’s Petrișor Peiu mocked the nomination as a game of “chess in Cișmigiu Park,” while former minister Adrian Câciu claimed Mureșan would not have become an MEP without PSD lists. USR’s Claudiu Năsui warned that neither a PNL-USR-UDMR minority nor a PSD single-party government would muster enough votes, leaving the Bolojan cabinet in place as the likeliest outcome.
Dan, who returned from Poland on Thursday, departs again on Saturday for a security summit hosted by President Karol Nawrocki, underscoring the parallel track of regional defence talks amid Russia’s war in Ukraine. He will convene the Supreme Defence Council on Monday at 15:00 to review national security priorities.
