Actor Vincent Pastore, known for The Sopranos role, dies at 80 in New York
Vincent Pastore, the American actor best known for his role as Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero in the HBO series *The Sopranos*, died on Saturday at the age of 80, his manager Robert Attermann confirmed to multiple outlets. Pastore was found dead in his Bronx, New York, residence, according to reports from Deadline, the *New York Times*, and the Associated Press .
Born in the Bronx in 1946 to an Italian-American family, Pastore served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War before working as a limousine driver and nightclub manager, according to the *New York Times* and dpa. Actors Matt and Kevin Dillon, who knew him from his time as a chauffeur, encouraged him to pursue acting, leading to early roles in Martin Scorsese’s *Goodfellas* (1990) and Brian De Palma’s *Carlito’s Way* (1993) .
Pastore’s breakthrough came in 1999 with *The Sopranos*, where he played Bonpensiero, a loyal associate of mob boss Tony Soprano who later became an FBI informant. His character’s execution in the Season 2 finale—shot by Soprano, Paulie Gualtieri, and Silvio Dante after his betrayal was discovered—remains one of the series’ most iconic scenes. The nickname “Big Pussy” derived from his character’s early career as a burglar, with “Big” distinguishing him from another character, “Little Pussy” .
Bob McGowan, Pastore’s manager during *The Sopranos* era, told the Associated Press he learned of the death from another actor in the series, Vincent Curatola. McGowan said Pastore was found after days without contact, adding that he had been trying to reach him about a potential role. “He was the most loyal client and always involved in charitable actions,” McGowan said. “He was the kind of person who would help anyone, which is rare in this business” .
Attermann, who represented Pastore for over 30 years, described him as “one of the kindest, most generous people I’ve ever known.” He noted Pastore’s warmth toward fans and his dedication to mentoring young actors. “Vinny treated everyone with warmth and respect, never refusing a fan’s request for a photo or autograph,” Attermann said in a statement to the Associated Press .
Michael Imperioli, a longtime friend and co-star, posted on Instagram that he and Pastore had worked and traveled together extensively. “Vinny was an incredibly kind-hearted brother who deeply cared for his family and friends. I will miss him forever,” Imperioli wrote .
Pastore’s filmography included roles in *Awakenings* (1990), *Shark Tale*, and *Spinning Gold*, as well as appearances in reality shows such as *The Celebrity Apprentice*, hosted by Donald Trump . The cause of death has not been disclosed.
