Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz team up for US Open mixed doubles wildcard
Alcaraz confirms U.S. Open return after wrist injury layoff to defend title

Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz will compete together in the US Open mixed doubles after receiving a wildcard into the main draw, organizers announced on Saturday. The tournament begins on Tuesday, with the winning team sharing a $1 million prize.
Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, returns to the US Open for the first time since 2022. She has not entered the singles draw, with the final wildcard instead awarded to American Sofia Kenin. Williams sustained a knee injury during her singles comeback at Wimbledon in July and later played doubles with sister Venus at the Cincinnati Open, where they lost in the first round.
Alcaraz, a seven-time Grand Slam singles winner, makes his return to competition after a four-month absence due to a right wrist injury. The Spaniard, ranked No. 2, will also defend his US Open singles title.
The USTA revamped the mixed doubles format last year, reducing it to a two-day, 16-team event with a shorter scoring system. The top six pairs with the best combined singles rankings received direct entry, while eight others, including Williams and Alcaraz, were granted wildcards. Defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori were the only doubles specialist pairing awarded a wildcard.
Other high-profile pairings include world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka with Novak Djokovic, Jessica Pegula with Taylor Fritz, Iga Swiatek with Casper Ruud, and Elina Svitolina with Gael Monfils. Withdrawals led to late adjustments: Pegula and Fritz teamed up after their original partners, Jack Draper and Elena Rybakina, pulled out with injuries. Emma Navarro and Tommy Paul, along with Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik, received the remaining wildcards. Diana Shnaider remains in the field after Daniil Medvedev’s withdrawal.
Alcaraz confirmed the partnership on social media, posting, “Let’s gooooo!” with a fire emoji and tagging Williams . Williams previously won the US Open mixed doubles title in 1998 with Max Mirnyi.
