Italy renames Milan-Malpensa Airport after late former PM Silvio Berlusconi despite local opposition
Milano-Malpensa Airport was officially renamed after former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Friday, with the facility now bearing the name *Silvio Berlusconi Milan-Malpensa Airport*. The renaming follows a 2024 decision by Italy’s civil aviation authority, ENAC, which approved the change despite legal challenges from Milan’s city government and nearby municipalities.
A ceremony at Terminal 1 marked the unveiling of the new name, attended by Senate President Ignazio La Russa, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini, and Lombardia regional President Attilio Fontana, as well as Berlusconi’s family, including his daughter Marina and brother Paolo. Marina Berlusconi told ANSA the change filled her with “pride and emotion,” adding, “What better name for such a bridge than Silvio Berlusconi? He was a man who always sought dialogue with everyone” .
Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala had opposed the renaming, arguing Italian rules typically require a 10-year wait before naming public spaces after deceased figures. Local authorities also contested ENAC’s sole authority over the decision, but a regional administrative court rejected their appeals in April, ruling that airports—state infrastructure with national and international scope—cannot be treated as local place names .
Berlusconi, a media magnate and founder of the Forza Italia party, served as prime minister four times and died in June 2023 at age 86. The renaming was supported by Italy’s center-right government, including Forza Italia, which remains part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s coalition. The airport’s IATA code, MXP, remains unchanged.
