Portugal schools remove failing exam grades after overnight update amid nationwide grading dispute
Portugal education minister warns schools to release exam results by Friday amid hundreds of ungraded tests
Continuation
Schools across Portugal opened their doors Saturday for students and parents to check the results of national exams. At least one school has reported that it received an update on grades overnight and no longer has any failing grades.
At the Escola Secundária Padre António Vieira in Lisbon, which opened about an hour ago, there was little activity as many parents had already checked their children's grades online. However, some parents and students preferred to check the exam results in person.
One parent was checking the grade of their daughter's Portuguese exam, one of the exams that raised the most questions during the grading process. The student received a grade of 4 out of 20 in Portuguese, which is not sufficient for her to enter university. She believes she deserves a grade of at least 14 and plans to request a review of her exam. However, as an external student, she must come to the school in person to request the review and must take the second phase of the exam on the coming Tuesday.
The issues with the exam grading process are not isolated to this school. Nationwide, there are reports of students with failing grades that need to be clarified. The situation is expected to be resolved over the weekend or by Monday, just one day before the start of the second phase of the national exams.
Meanwhile, the Fenprof teachers' union has stated that the exam process is compromised and that the true extent of the problems and the consequences of this digital grading process for the exams is not yet known. The union also said that workers are not obliged to work under these conditions. School directors have asked for more respect from the minister.
