British cyclist Finlay Tarling, 19, died on Friday after a collision with a light goods vehicle during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal, a 166.8-kilometer route from Melgaço to Fafe in northern Portugal. The vehicle, not part of the race convoy, was traveling in the opposite direction of the peloton when it struck Tarling near kilometer 85.3 in the Arcozelo area, according to Portugal’s National Republican Guard .
The stage was suspended with about 20 kilometers remaining, and the podium ceremony was canceled as a sign of respect. Tarling, a time trial specialist, was riding for the Israeli NSN Development Team. His death was confirmed by race organizers, who described it as a “tragic day for cycling” .
The Volta a Portugal resumed on Saturday without celebrations, with organizers stating there would be “a sporting competition, but not a party.” Riders observed a minute of silence before the start of the ninth stage in Paredes, with race leader Alexis Guerin wearing a black jersey. The NSN Development Team withdrew from the remaining stages but will continue competing in the Czech Tour and Arctic Race of Norway with the support of Tarling’s family .
Tarling’s father, Michael, released a statement through TNT Sports commentator Jez Cox, thanking supporters for messages and photos of his son. “Knowing how many lives Fin has touched has been a tremendous help,” he said . Tarling’s older brother, Joshua, 22, is a WorldTour rider for Ineos Grenadiers and a 2023 world championship bronze medalist in the time trial.
The National Republican Guard confirmed an investigation is underway, including whether road signage was removed or ignored at the accident site. Major Tiago Machado said the collision involved a light goods vehicle, and authorities are examining the circumstances . Portuguese Cycling Federation President Cândido Barbosa said the race would continue but acknowledged the difficulty for riders in the aftermath .
Tributes were also held at other races, including a minute of silence before the start of the Czech Tour’s third stage and applause at the Arctic Race of Norway. Tarling had placed third in the junior time trial at the British Championships this year and was considered a rising talent in the sport .
