British cyclist Finlay Tarling dies after collision during Volta a Portugal stage
British cyclist Finlay Tarling, 19, died on Friday after a collision with a vehicle during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal, race organizers and his team confirmed.
The accident occurred on the stage between Melgaço and Fafe, where Tarling, riding for the NSN Development Team, was struck by a car traveling in the opposite direction and not connected to the event, according to Portuguese public broadcaster RTP . The stage was suspended with about 20 kilometers remaining, and the podium ceremony was canceled "in a sign of respect and mourning," organizers said.
The NSN Development Team, co-owned by former Barcelona football star Andres Iniesta, confirmed Tarling’s death in a social media statement. "Fin was a much-loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed," the team said .
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro expressed his condolences to Tarling’s family and team, stating on X that the news "leaves us deeply shaken" . Tarling was the younger brother of Joshua Tarling, 22, who rides for the Netcompany-Ineos team and won bronze in the 2023 World Championships time trial.
Portuguese media reported the collision took place on the N306 road near Arcozelo, close to the Lima River, though organizers did not immediately confirm further details . The Portuguese Cycling Federation and race organizers issued a statement lamenting Tarling’s death and confirming the stage’s neutralization.
Tarling, a Welsh rider, had recently placed third in the British under-23 national time trial championships and 11th in the Volta a Portugal’s time trial stage . The NSN Development Team announced it would withdraw from the race following his death .
