Used electric vehicles are increasingly entering Europe’s secondary market as leasing contracts expire, with financial firms and dealers now facing the challenge of reselling them, according to Michał Dyc of Volkswagen Financial Services. Speaking on Sunday, Dyc noted that his company has financed electric vehicles for years, with about 80 percent of Poland’s new car sales involving its services, and many of these vehicles are now returning after lease terms end.
Battery condition remains the primary concern for buyers, though Volkswagen Financial Services reports that independent Bosch tests show used EV batteries typically retain over 90 percent of their original capacity. Dyc cited an Audi Q8 with 89,000 kilometers that maintained 91 percent battery health. The company also offers an eight-year or 160,000-kilometer battery warranty on its electric models to address consumer hesitation .
Germany’s charging infrastructure is expanding rapidly, with 209,000 public charging points registered as of Sept. 1, a 24 percent increase since July 2025, according to data from the Bundesnetzagentur analyzed by 1Komma5Grad. Stuttgart leads with 2,107 charging points per 100 square kilometers, while rural areas lag behind, said 1Komma5Grad product chief Jannik Schall .
In Poland, the used EV market is seen as a potential catalyst for broader adoption, with Maciej Mazur of the Polish Association of New Mobility noting that battery-electric vehicles now account for 22 percent of new registrations in the EU, surpassing gasoline cars. Mazur added that Poland lags behind most EU countries in EV adoption, but a growing supply of secondhand electric vehicles could accelerate change .
