Dutch football federation calls for FIFA presidents removal by 2027 and governance overhaul

The Dutch football association KNVB announced on Sunday it no longer has confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino and called for new leadership by 2027, paired with a structural overhaul of the organization’s governance.
In a statement, the KNVB said FIFA’s current leadership model concentrates too much power in the president’s hands and lacks clear separation between the president and the administration. The federation, a founding member of FIFA in 1904, had previously supported Infantino’s re-election but withdrew that backing after his now-abandoned proposal to sell stakes in FIFA events, including the World Cup, to private investors. “Withdrawing the proposal was necessary, but it does not restore the trust that has been lost,” the KNVB said .
The KNVB proposed hosting an international summit in Amsterdam to discuss FIFA’s future, explicitly excluding Infantino. “He is not welcome at this meeting about the future. He is the past,” Gijs de Jong, the KNVB’s secretary general, told NOS . The federation outlined three priorities for reform: stronger governance with independent oversight, a focus on human rights and sustainability in decision-making, and reinvesting up to 90 percent of FIFA’s distributable revenue into global football development .
The KNVB’s letter to UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin emphasized that a new president alone would not suffice. “We see too much power concentrated around the FIFA president and insufficient separation between the President and the FIFA administration,” the letter stated . The federation also called for FIFA’s congress to take the lead on key decisions, with the president serving primarily as a global representative rather than an operational leader.
UEFA has separately indicated it is preparing a criminal case against Infantino, accusing him of “criminal mismanagement,” according to reports cited by NOS . Infantino, elected in 2016, is expected to seek a fourth term in March 2027, though potential challengers, such as CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani, have until Nov. 18 to declare their candidacy .
The KNVB’s proposal for the Amsterdam summit invites all 211 FIFA member associations and confederations, framing it as a collaborative effort to define “what kind of FIFA we want” before selecting new leadership . FIFA did not respond to requests for comment on the KNVB’s statement or summit plans .
