US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that a preliminary US-Iran agreement to end the 107-day-old war could be signed as early as Sunday, but Iranian officials immediately pushed back, insisting no final decision had been made on the timing.

Speaking to reporters in Washington, Trump said the deal would “immediately” reopen the Strait of Hormuz to all shipping and prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. “We are very close,” he told reporters. “It could be signed tomorrow.”

Pakistan’s prime minister, acting as mediator, struck a more cautious but optimistic note. “We are closer than ever to a peace agreement,” he said in Islamabad, adding that discussions were in their final stages.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei contradicted Trump’s timeline. “The date of the signing has not been determined,” he told reporters in Tehran on Saturday. “It will not be on Sunday.”

Qatari negotiators flew to Tehran on Saturday to press for an accord, according to Austrian and German media reports.

The proposed first-stage agreement would halt hostilities and open the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane, to all traffic. Trump said the US would retain “the ultimate alternative” if talks fail, but he framed the deal as a breakthrough after months of airstrikes and naval clashes.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, a key power center, has publicly questioned whether it would sign any accord, complicating the prospects for a Sunday ceremony.

The war began on 28 February 2026 after a series of escalations that drew in regional powers and disrupted global oil markets. Diplomatic efforts intensified this weekend as negotiators raced to finalize terms before the scheduled signing.
