Washington and Tehran appeared on Sunday to be moving toward the first stage of a US-Iran deal to end the 107-day-old war, but Iran’s foreign ministry insisted no signing would take place that day despite repeated claims by US President Donald Trump that a preliminary agreement would be finalised on 15 June 2026.

Trump said on Saturday that a memorandum of understanding would be signed on Sunday and that the Strait of Hormuz would “be open to all” immediately afterwards, while Pakistan’s prime minister, acting as mediator, told reporters the two sides were “closer than ever” to a peace deal. Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei had said only hours earlier that no date had been fixed and that Sunday would not see a signing, . Iran’s foreign ministry later reiterated that it had not made a final decision on the timing, adding that caution was required before commenting on any signing date, .

The proposed accord, which Axios reported would be signed electronically during a virtual meeting hosted by Pakistan and Qatar, would extend the current 60-day armistice, reopen the Hormuz shipping lane, and open negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme. Trump announced on Truth Social on Saturday that the preliminary agreement would be signed on Sunday and would prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, . Pakistan’s prime minister separately told domestic media that the two sides were closer to peace than at any previous point, .

Yet Iranian officials continued to push back. The country’s Revolutionary Guard denied it was ready to sign any memorandum, and Baghaei told reporters that Iran would not be rushed into a deal, . Iranian state outlets also quoted Baghaei as saying discussions would conclude “in the coming days,” not on Sunday, .

The gap between Washington’s optimism and Tehran’s caution underscores the fragility of the process. Trump’s announcement on 13 June that a deal would be signed the following day was immediately disputed by Iran, which said no date had been agreed, . Should the two sides fail to reach even a preliminary accord by the end of the day, the risk of a renewed escalation in a conflict that has already drawn in Israel, regional proxies and global shipping lanes would rise sharply.
