Man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO pleads guilty in Manhattan federal court
Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty on Friday in a Manhattan federal court to stalking charges tied to the December 2024 fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, admitting he shot and killed Thompson outside a New York City hotel.
During the 45-minute hearing, the 28-year-old defendant stated, “I shot Mr. Thompson, and he died,” and acknowledged he knew his actions were illegal . Judge Margaret Garnett accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for December 18. Federal prosecutors said they would seek life imprisonment.
Mangione described stalking Thompson, posing as an investor to obtain details about a conference the executive was attending, and using a 3D-printed firearm with a silencer to carry out the shooting . He also admitted sending an email to UnitedHealthcare stating his intent to kill Thompson and waiting for a 3D printer to manufacture the weapon .
Defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo filed a motion to dismiss separate New York state murder charges against Mangione, arguing double jeopardy protections under state law . A state trial on murder and weapons charges had been set for September 8. Mangione faces eight state charges, including murder, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
Relatives of Thompson, including his widow Paulette Thompson, attended the hearing and reacted with visible emotion as Mangione described the events . Prosecutors presented evidence, including video footage showing Mangione approaching Thompson before the shooting .
Mangione said he targeted Thompson after years of severe back pain and difficulties navigating the U.S. health insurance system, though he was not a UnitedHealthcare client . The case has drawn international attention, with some online supporters praising Mangione as a symbol of frustration with the health care industry .
Federal charges against Mangione include interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death. The state charges carry a potential sentence of 25 years to life imprisonment .
