Tennis star Nick Kyrgios admits cocaine positive test, faces provisional ban

Nick Kyrgios revealed on Wednesday he tested positive for cocaine and was provisionally suspended from tennis. The 31-year-old Australian announced the failed drug test in a social media post, stating he made a “huge mistake” and took full responsibility. The International Tennis Integrity Agency confirmed the positive test, saying his sample was taken on June 22 at the Mallorca Open and the result was verified on July 17. A mandatory provisional suspension was applied on August 4, which Kyrgios did not appeal .
Kyrgios, a former Wimbledon finalist who lost to Novak Djokovic in the 2022 championship, is currently ranked 919th after a series of injuries limited his play. He has competed in only eight tournaments and won two matches since the start of 2023. In his post, he cited the physical and mental toll of injuries and the difficulty of accepting the end of his career. “At times I’ve felt helpless and alone. None of that excuses what I did,” he wrote .
The ITIA will prosecute the case, and Kyrgios faces a potential ban of up to four years once an independent tribunal convenes. Cocaine is banned as a doping substance during competitions, though lower sanctions may apply for out-of-competition use. Kyrgios received a wild card to play doubles at Wimbledon last month but lost in the first round with partner Alexander Bublik .
In his statement, Kyrgios apologized to fans, family, sponsors, and children who look up to him, acknowledging the example he sets. He described the positive test as a “wake-up call” and said he would step away from social media and public life for four weeks to focus on himself .
Kyrgios has a history of disciplinary issues and struggles with mental health. In 2019, he was defaulted from a match at the Italian Open for throwing a chair and later fined $113,000 for verbally abusing an umpire in Cincinnati. The ATP issued a suspended 16-week ban that year for a pattern of verbal abuse. Kyrgios has previously spoken about his past use of alcohol and drugs, including a 2019 hospitalization for mental health struggles .
