Granjas de pulpos: ni en Canarias ni en ninguna otra parte La noticia de que Nueva Pescanova ha renunciado a crear su granja de pulpos en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria solo puede ir seguida de la decisión más lógica y sensata: la prohibición total de la cría industrial de pulpos, tal y como plantea INTERCIDS en su propuesta legislativaPescanova retira su petición para crear una granja de pulpos en el Puerto de Las Palmas Desde que en 2021 Nueva Pescanova anunció la instalación de la primera granja de cría industrial de pulpos del mundo, chocó de frente con la oposición de la comunidad científica y de las entidades de protección animal. La historia del proyecto ha sido, en realidad, una lenta agonía que refleja lo costoso –también para el contribuyente- de tratar de sacar adelante una iniciativa que pone en riesgo a los animales, los ecosistemas y, finalmente, la salud de las personas. Nueva Pescanova se encontró con un primer revés cuando el Gobierno de Canarias concluyó que la evaluación ambiental simplificada era insuficiente y obligó a someter el proyecto a una evaluación ambiental ordinaria, al apreciarse posibles efectos significativos sobre el medio ambiente. La documentación exigida nunca se presentó y la Dirección General de Pesca de Canarias archivó el expediente al no haber cumplido la empresa con los trámites requeridos. Paralelamente, la Autoridad Portuaria de las Palmas inició el procedimiento de caducidad de la concesión, dando un ultimátum a la empresa para reactivar el expediente o asumir su archivo definitivo. Organizaciones como Compassion in World Farming y AnimaNaturalis, entre otras, impulsaron una campaña internacional, reclamando el cierre definitivo del expediente. Finalmente, el 23 de julio de 2026 se confirmó la tan esperada noticia, Nueva Pescanova renuncia al proyecto en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Esa macrogranja de pulpos no llegará a hacerse realidad. Ahora, a por la prohibición Este proyecto de macrogranja de pulpos no ha fracasado únicamente por escollos burocráticos, el proyecto ha fracasado, sobre todo, porque es una muy mala idea, que crea rechazo y provoca disonancia solo de imaginarla. Un proyecto que va en contra de cualquier sentido común en el contexto de una crisis climática que afecta especialmente a nuestro país y que pide a gritos proteger y cuidar de nuestra biodiversidad, no destrozarla. El paso lógico y sensato tras esta demostración palmaria de que las granjas de pulpos son inaceptables desde la perspectiva ética, científica y medioambiental, es aprobar la única propuesta legislativa presentada en Europa para prohibir, antes de que sea una realidad, la cría industrial de pulpos en España. El proyecto, desarrollado por INTERCIDS, Operadores Jurídicos por los Animales, ya se encuentra registrado como proposición de ley en el Congreso, a la espera de su tramitación. ¿Por qué el pulpo no y otros animales sí? No queremos animales hacinados en granjas: ni pulpos, ni vacas, ni cerdos, ni gallinas. Sin embargo, estas últimas ya existen, y son de las industrias más poderosas del planeta, así que no nos queda otra que seguir destapando sus horrores estructurales y promover alternativas viables. Pero no debemos olvidar que los pulpos aún son animales salvajes que, con mayor o menor bienestar en un océano cada vez más degradado, todavía viven libres. Y eso no es un asunto menor. Debatir en el año 2026 que se pueda convertir a un animal salvaje en un zombi rodeado de otros zombies, automutilándose e incluso devorando a sus semejantes, es algo que no deberíamos aceptar. Y es que la fascinación que despiertan los pulpos no es casual. Ese cuerpo blando y flexible, con neuronas en todos sus brazos y con unas capacidades físicas y cognitivas radicalmente distintas a las nuestras, que ni siquiera comprendemos del todo. Esa naturaleza salvaje, nunca domesticada ni alterada, que por un lado nos deslumbra y por otro sabemos que deberíamos dejar en paz. Dejémoslos en paz. Dejemos de invertir recursos, también públicos, en investigar cómo criar industrialmente a los pulpos y empecemos a mirar hacia otras fuentes de alimentación mucho más sostenibles, éticas, saludables y tan o más deliciosas que los productos de origen animal. Exijamos que se apruebe la propuesta legislativa de INTERCIDS y coloquemos el incentivo económico en hacer un planeta más respetuoso con todos los animales y con ello, más habitable. Esto no va de Nueva Pescanova, esto va de un modelo suicida. No necesitamos esperar a que esta u otra empresa vuelva a intentarlo para descubrir, otra vez, que un animal solitario, inteligente y extraordinariamente complejo no encaja en una lógica industrial diseñada para producir millones de individuos al año. Porque el proyecto de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria no se ha cancelado por problemas burocráticos, se ha muerto porque era una aberración.
