The USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group arrived in the Middle East on Wednesday, the U.S. military confirmed on Thursday, relieving the USS Abraham Lincoln after a deployment of more than 270 days.
U.S. Central Command said in a post on X that the George Washington was operating in the region as part of a scheduled deployment. The Lincoln, which left San Diego in November 2025, had been rerouted to the Middle East after the U.S. and Israel launched their war with Iran on Feb. 28, setting a U.S. naval record for the longest deployment without a port stop, according to Al Jazeera .
Reports in U.S. media, including specialist military publications, described deteriorating conditions aboard the Lincoln, with relatives of crew members citing paltry food and hygiene supplies, maintenance issues, and mental health struggles. Families told outlets that several sailors had attempted to jump overboard, and the Navy confirmed one sailor who fell into the sea on Aug. 3 was recovered. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao stated that “a small number of mental health cases were treated with no loss of life,” while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called the coverage reckless .
Democratic lawmakers have demanded an investigation into the conditions, with some charging that the situation reflects poor planning for the war, now in its sixth month. The Lincoln is en route to the U.S., a CENTCOM spokesperson told Al Jazeera, while the George Washington joins the USS George H.W. Bush and the USS Boxer in the region .
The U.S. has maintained a blockade on Iranian ports, with CENTCOM reporting it had facilitated the passage of 1,300 ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Axios cited sources saying the U.S. had secretly established a nighttime maritime corridor, allowing 15–20 tankers to transport roughly 10 million barrels of oil daily along Oman’s coast, about half the pre-war volume .
President Donald Trump dismissed concerns over the Lincoln’s conditions last Friday, stating that the ship would soon rotate out and be replaced. He confirmed on Thursday that the Lincoln was moving or about to move, adding, “no, they’re not” worried when asked about family concerns .
The shift leaves the U.S. without an aircraft carrier in the Western Pacific, despite its strategic emphasis on the region. Meanwhile, Houthi rebels claimed drone attacks on Saudi Arabia’s Abha airport and an Aramco facility, while UK maritime security monitors reported a tanker seized off Yemen by armed individuals and diverted toward Somalia .
