Turkey eyes S-400 sale to UAE to unlock US F-35 jets: Ankara deepens Ukraine ties

Turkey is making progress in resolving its defense and diplomatic challenges. On Saturday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that Turkey and Ukraine are deepening their strategic partnership amid the ongoing conflict. This follows a productive visit to Kyiv, where Ukraine approved a free trade agreement, marking a milestone in their relations. Fidan reaffirmed Ankara's support for Kyiv's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a separate development, Turkey is aiming to offload its Russian S-400 air defense system to the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) in hopes of unblocking the purchase of advanced American F-35 fighter jets. Hulusi Akar, chairman of the Turkish Parliament's National Defense Committee, expressed confidence that the S-400 issue will be resolved, allowing Turkey to return to the F-35 program. The suspension of the F-35 program was directly linked to Turkey's acquisition of the S-400 systems.
Deputy Foreign Minister Levent Gümrükçü stated that Turkey and the US are closer than ever to resolving the CAATSA sanctions and F-35 dispute. A joint working group has explored options to satisfy both sides, with Washington's commitment to deliver on any deal now seen as credible for the first time in years.
Akar also had positive and constructive meetings with US lawmakers in Washington, discussing bilateral defense cooperation, the F-35 program, and Turkey's vision for a "Terror-Free Region." He expressed optimism on the F-35 issue, noting that US officials have received "positive information" through their channels and that a solution may be reached.
The proposed deal to transfer the S-400 to the U.A.E. is seen as a crucial step in resolving the ongoing dispute with the US over the F-35 program. The suspension of the F-35 program was directly linked to Turkey's acquisition of the S-400 systems.
Akar described the meetings with US lawmakers as "positive, productive and constructive," indicating a potential breakthrough in the long-standing dispute over the F-35 program and CAATSA sanctions.
