Macron and Sweden sign 4.3 billion frigate deal to boost Baltic defense cooperation
French President Emmanuel Macron and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson signed a €4.3 billion deal in Stockholm on Monday for the purchase of four French frigates, manufactured by Naval Group. The first frigate is scheduled for delivery in 2030, according to the Élysée Palace .
The signing ceremony took place aboard the French frigate *Amiral Ronarc’h*, docked in Stockholm’s harbor. Macron and Kristersson also oversaw the signing of a framework agreement by French Defence Minister Catherine Vautrin and Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson to deepen cooperation in operational, capability, and industrial defense areas .
Kristersson previously described the frigate deal as “one of the largest Swedish defense investments since the Gripen fighter jet was introduced in the 1980s” . The frigates are designed to counter surface, airborne, underwater, asymmetric, and cyber threats, according to Naval Group’s specifications .
Sweden announced the purchase in May as part of a broader rearmament effort following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its NATO accession in 2024. The country has pledged to allocate 3.5% of its GDP to defense by 2030 .
The agreement also includes provisions for joint crew training, military exercises, and enhanced cooperation between the two nations’ armed forces, with a focus on securing the Baltic and North Seas .
Macron and Kristersson held a joint press conference aboard the *Amiral Ronarc’h* after the signing. Macron stated, “We are sealing an important, mutual, and ambitious strategic cooperation,” and emphasized that the partnership demonstrates how European sovereignty in defense is built collectively .
The deal follows France’s December 2025 purchase of two GlobalEye surveillance aircraft from Swedish manufacturer Saab for over €1 billion, part of a pattern of cross-industrial defense procurement between the two countries .
Macron’s visit also included a meeting with Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Crown Princess Victoria at the Royal Palace in Stockholm . Earlier in the day, two Swedish JAS Gripen fighter jets escorted Macron’s aircraft into Stockholm .
