Arsenal extended their perfect start to the Premier League season with a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Monday, as Bukayo Saka’s 59th-minute goal secured the champions’ second consecutive win. The result left Arsenal joint top of the table with six points from two matches, while Villa remain pointless and have yet to register a shot on target this season.
Saka’s strike, set up by Eberechi Eze and Riccardo Calafiori, capped a controlled performance from Mikel Arteta’s side, who have now won their opening two league games without conceding a goal. The match marked Arteta’s 250th Premier League game in charge of the Gunners, a milestone he reached with the same starting lineup that defeated Coventry 3-0 in their season opener on Aug. 21.
Villa, meanwhile, fielded debutants Nicolas Jackson and Zion Suzuki, the latter becoming the first Japanese goalkeeper to play in the Premier League. Suzuki replaced Emiliano Martinez, one of several key departures from a squad that won the Europa League last season. Villa have sold Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Martinez, Lucas Digne and Youri Tielemans this summer, with Konsa making his Arsenal debut as a late substitute against his former club after a £51 million move on Aug. 21.
Arsenal’s defensive solidity was evident, as Villa failed to test goalkeeper David Raya. The visitors thought they had a penalty in the ninth minute when Ian Maatsen fouled Saka, but a video review downgraded the decision to a free kick. Villa’s best chance came when Emiliano Buendia struck the crossbar, while Jackson provided a near-perfect cross that George Hemmings could not convert.
Arteta’s only concern was a late injury to Declan Rice, who limped off in the closing stages. Arsenal now turn their attention to Sunday’s home clash with Chelsea, who have also won their first two matches. The Gunners continue to track Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
Villa’s struggles reflect a summer of upheaval, with financial constraints forcing a squad overhaul. Unai Emery’s side have now lost their first two league matches of a season without scoring for the first time since 2002. Despite the defeat, Emery noted an improvement from their 4-0 opening-day loss at Brighton, where they trailed by four goals and were reduced to 10 men within 40 minutes.
Before the match, both teams wore black armbands to honor former Arsenal and Villa goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer, who died on Aug. 14. Norwegian midfielder Martin Ødegaard, Arsenal’s captain, also referenced the recent death of Norway’s King Harald in pre-match comments.
