Solveig Løvseth’s dramatic collapse in the final stretch of the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii on Saturday handed the women’s title to American Taylor Knibb, while Germany’s Laura Philipp secured second place.

Løvseth, the defending champion, had overtaken Knibb after 34 kilometers of the marathon leg, building a commanding lead with the finish line in sight. But with just 1.5 kilometers remaining, she suffered a sudden and severe collapse, unable to stand or walk. Commentators described the scene as “goal-less,” and her former coach, Arild Tveiten, told NRK, “It’s quite awful to watch.” Knibb reclaimed the lead and finished in 8 hours, 36 minutes, and 29 seconds. Løvseth eventually regained her footing, jogged the final kilometer, and crossed the line with raised arms, smiling and exchanging high-fives with spectators .

Philipp, who paced her race meticulously, called her silver medal finish “extremely happy” and said it “almost feels like a win,” according to German media reports . Knibb’s victory came after Løvseth’s late falter, which one commentator said was unlike any collapse they had witnessed.

The race, held in Kailua-Kona, featured a 3.86-kilometer swim, 180-kilometer bike, and 42.195-kilometer run. Løvseth had won the championship in her debut appearance in 2025, just months after transitioning to full-distance competition.
