Russia freed former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman on Tuesday after more than four years in detention, following a humanitarian pardon approved by Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. and Russian officials said.
Gilman, 32, was arrested in January 2022 in Voronezh, about 340 miles south of Moscow, on charges of assaulting a police officer during an incident on a train. He was later sentenced to 3.5 years in prison, with an additional eight-year term added in October 2024 after further allegations of assaulting prison staff, according to reports .
U.S. President Donald Trump announced Gilman’s release on social media, stating that Putin agreed to free him “very much on a humanitarian basis” after discussions between the two leaders. Trump added that Russia sought no concessions in return .
A State Department plane carrying Gilman landed at Dulles International Airport near Washington late Tuesday. He was greeted by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, who helped negotiate the release, along with hamburgers and milkshakes. Witkoff thanked Putin “for the pardon and for his personal engagement throughout this process” .
Gilman was accompanied by his mother, Nancy, and a medical team of four doctors. A U.S. official who spoke to him said he was walking and talking, though his exact medical condition remains unclear. Advocacy group Global Reach, representing Gilman’s family, previously reported he had been in a “dissociative stupor” after being moved to a psychiatric ward in late June .
After his arrival in Washington, Gilman was transported to a rehabilitation center in San Antonio, Texas, for medical treatment . Trump posted a photo of Gilman on the plane, describing him as gaunt but able to request a cheeseburger upon landing. “I will take care of that!” Trump wrote .
U.S. officials had repeatedly urged Moscow to release Gilman so he could receive medical care in the United States. The White House and State Department confirmed Putin’s pardon as the basis for his release .
