Kimi Antonelli won the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, extending his lead in the Formula One championship to 45 points over Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes driver, who started from pole position, had a challenging race but managed to secure his sixth victory of the season.
The race at Spa-Francorchamps was eventful from the start. On the first lap, Antonelli's teammate George Russell crashed out after a collision with Lewis Hamilton. Russell, who had been Antonelli's closest rival in the championship, was forced to retire from the race. Hamilton received a five-second penalty for the incident but continued the race.
The race saw multiple virtual safety car (VSC) periods, which affected the positions of several drivers. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari took advantage of one of these periods to take the lead temporarily. However, Antonelli managed to overtake Leclerc with ten laps remaining and held on to win the race.
Antonelli finished ahead of Leclerc by 1.9 seconds, with Max Verstappen of Red Bull completing the podium in third place. Hamilton finished fourth, followed by Oscar Piastri, Isack Hadjar, Lando Norris, Gabriel Bortoleto, Arvid Lindblad, and Franco Colapinto.
In the championship standings, Antonelli now has 204 points, with Hamilton in second place with 159 points and Russell in third with 154 points. Mercedes leads the constructors' championship with 358 points, followed by Ferrari with 285 points.
After the race, Antonelli commented on his victory: "It's great to be back on the top step after a few difficult GPs. It was a tough race and a complicated victory to achieve because Charles was fast. We got lucky in the race for the title and that's why we have to seize all the opportunities because everything can change quickly. We just need to keep performing, keep getting results, and we'll see what happens at the end of the year."
George Russell, who was visibly disappointed with his retirement, said: "I came out of Turn One, for whatever reason I was 30-40% down on my battery. I just totally got swamped up by three cars. Incident with Lewis, I have not really seen it. But I thought probably a racing incident. I am not going to blame Lewis. If things were normal, I would have been battling with Lewis, battling with Kimi and Max. It is one thing after another, after another, after another. Not good enough on all regards so try and reset again."
The next race in the Formula One season is the Hungarian Grand Prix, which will take place next week. With 12 races remaining in the season, the championship is far from decided, but Antonelli's lead is significant.
